FAITH IN ACTION PERSONNEL COMMITTEE MEMBER

The Personnel Committee of the Faith In Action Board of Directors is seeking volunteers to participate in monthly Personnel Committee meetings andnon-meeting activities as needed.

The Personnel Committee is responsible to:
  • Provide guidance, oversight, and support to the staff and Board of Directors as it develops and implements employee staffing, performance management, and compensation systems.  
  • Provide a vehicle for escalations when conflict resolution is needed.
  • Ensure that personnel practices are uniformly applied and all mandates, state and federal laws and all grantor requirements related to staffing are being met.  
PRE-REQUISITES:
  1. Passion to support staff, Executive Director and board members.
  2. Commitment to serve a minimum of one-year term and to attend meetings called by the chairperson.
  3. Previous human resource management experience helpful but not required.
  4. Compensation/Benefits experience extremely helpful also but not required.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
  1. This committee is a standing committee of the Faith In Action Cass County Board of Directors and has been established by and accountable to the Board. 
  2. The Personnel Committee chairperson and committee members work closely in cooperation with the Executive Director and the board.  
  3. Each member of this committee is expected to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to those who hold fiduciary responsibilities and to maintain the highest standard of confidentiality at all times while recognizing the value in a chain of command.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. The Committee advises the organization on matters relating to personnel policies and practices, compensation and benefits, employee relations, staffing and organizational structure.  Legal issues must be directed to legal counsel.
  2. Work with the Executive Director to maintain an up-to-date Employee Handbook that reflects the mission, values, and constraints of Faith In Action Cass County (FIACC). A formal annual review of the Employee Handbook shall take place on or before July 1 of each year.  However, the committee will review policy changes as they are proposed throughout the year and forward this committee’s recommendations to the full board at the next Board Meeting.  
  3. Oversee the use of fair and effective performance appraisals across the organization.
  4. Work in conjunction with the Board Chair to conduct a mid-year status review of Executive Director goals and to conduct a formal year end evaluation of the Executive Director’s performance and present the findings to the full Board during the 4th quarter of each year.
  5. Participate as necessary with Executive Director in the hiring, layoffs and/or termination processes.
  6. Build, review and conduct activities related to Succession Planning for the Executive Director, key staff and board members including the establishment of a repeatable annual processes.
  7. Serve as a resource to the Board and Executive Director on changing employment conditions and other personnel related issues.
  8. To annually review employee benefit packages as part of employee compensation and to recommend compensation and benefit programs to the Board, including recommending salary changes for the Executive Director and staff.
  9. Monitor and recommend staff training and mentoring programs to help guide and direct the development of the staff and to support succession planning activities.
  10. Act as a neutral observer in cases of personnel issues, when requested by the Executive Director and only after proper protocol and chain of command practices have been followed.  
This is an unpaid volunteer position.  The reward is the joy of knowing you are doing important work for an important nonprofit organization in Cass County, Minnesota.  Typical hours of effort generally would not exceed 4-6 hours per month, frequently less.
